DJ Sabor opens Detroit's newest Salsa night at Sips Bar and Grill in Farmington Hills and Grupo Escobar will be there to make this one extra special. The night starts off with free salsa lesson and in between sets Sabor will play the best in Latin sounds. Guest DJs for the night will include DJ XS and DJ Issac known for his broad range of old school and new classics.

Grupo Escobar kicks off their first night at Sips Bar & Grill in Farmington Hills with a power packed night of salsa and dancing. Lead by guitarist and singer Steve Jarosz, Escobar has been a mainstay of the Detroit Salsa scene for the last few years and they are well known for the raw energy and passion they bring to their music.

When: Sunday December 7th 2008

Cost: $7 before 10pm, $10 after

Who: 21 +

Sips features a full bar, full menu, stage, dance floor and a powerful sound system. In addition to this Sunday night they will also host latin Thursdays with DJ Sabor.

Live from Detroit!

Did we dance or DID WE DANCE? Super Salsa Weekend had more than a lot of music, dancing, workshops and performances: it had a heart and it had soul. A bit of a dream come true, a bit of a mountain to climb. This was the biggest event YA has ever attempted and we are proud to say that Detroit really showed that it is a salsa city. Many months of saving the proceeds from all the other socials allowed us to invite some of the biggest names in salsa, two bands and 600 of our best friends to to make it a weekend to remember.

In the beginning this was just going to be another weekend with some out of town instructors, but little by little it began to grow and take on a life of its own. Conversations led to plans and plans led to actions. Once we added a few more instructors, then we added a band, then we needed more workshops to afford the band, then we needed another night to afford the workshops... Pretty soon we had more instructors, more bands, a healthy cup of excitement with a bowl of fear... Two days and nights? Could our scene support that? Were we out of our minds?

Grupo Escobar

Grupo Escobar is one of Detroits hottest latin bands and a favorite with Salseros. Playing their own distinctive form of Cuban Salsa infused with many other styles including Jazz, Blues, Middle Eastern and tropical rhythms, this 11 piece band is known for their engaging high energy performances. Lead singer and director Steve Jarosz and his band (several of whom are top dancers in their own right) offer one of the most unique and fun dance experiences and are guaranteed to impress with their musicality, versatility and the joy they bring to the music.

Salsa just doesn’t get any better when it’s RAW and this is what this band is all about. Although the band is newly formed, its players are not new to Salsa. Each member brings in years of musical background, experience and attitude. And when they decided to form this new group, it didn’t take them long to feel each other out and discover their true calling…… Salsa for dancers!

This band consists of the usual elements of any Latin Band. Starting with Freddie Aponte on the Timbales, Ignacio Miranda on the Bass, Reinaldo Santiago on the Congas/Bongos, and Bertin on the Vocal, but the real treat of this band is none other than Lorain Ohio’s best kept secret Orlando “El Mostro” Santiago playing the Cuatro.

El Mostro is no stranger to the musicians of El Gran Combo, Sonora Poncena, Yomo Toro, Richie Ray, to name a few. His genius talent on the Cuatro has been recognized by many musicians worldwide, and still surprises many when he shares the stage with so many recognize artists. But lately his passion has been watching the dancers simply take pleasure listening to his solos and taking aim on the dance floor. You will be surprise to know that Hard Salsa comes from Hard players. Combo Tropical will cater to those Hard needs.

Thursday Latin Nights go uber-upscale at the Miami style South Beach Ultra Lounge in the Fisher Building in downtown Detroit. Hosted by D, Cooper & Salsa Ray, Grupo Escobar add to their weekly schedule and get the downtown crowd moving to the sounds of Havana.

Salsa hits the river with a Havana Nights cruise aboard the luxurious 138 foot yacht Ovation in what promises to be a night to remember. The cruise features tasty treats including a gourmet menu , open bar and live Cuban music from Grupo Escobar.

Hosted by Metropolitan Events, Havana Nights is part of their Summer Cruise series where they host up to 300 guests on cruises combining fine dining and live entertainment.

Gilberto Santarosa @ Music Hall

Salsa Romantica star Gilberto Santarosa will follow the most romantic day - Valentines day, with the hottest musical night in Detroit. Music Hall in Detroit is opening up their stage and their dance floor for the first big salsa concert of 2008. Santa Rosa is A sonero -- an improvising salsa singer. He is known for his exceptional interpretation of ‘salsa romantica’ as well as a great singer of the “tropical” style of music.

Afterwards, the spacious and elegant Jazz Cafe will be open for an afterparty with the music of Grupo Escobar. For those going to Chicago, this is a missed opportunity, but what can you do? For those not going to Chicago -- this is without a doubt the place to be.

Dinner Crowd Meets the Dance Scene

It seems like every few months I',m compelled to write about Sunday's at Sangria which somewhat to my suprise but much to my delight is really kicking now. Being the night before New Years Eve, my guess was that it would be pretty empty as everyone saved up energy for the big one. But to my amazement, when I arrived the place was packed. Every table was filled, the band was swinging and the dance floor was already jumping. I hadn't even planned to take any pictures, but it was such a great night that I couldn't help myself.

It's always great it is to see the dancers come out in force, but it's even better to see a lot of new faces. One couldn't help but notice the many new people either having dinner and drinks or out for their first time dancing and seeing what salsa is really about. One of the new faces was Shahida Nurullah - one of Detroit's jazz gems who knows her clubs and it was obvious that she absolutely loved the music and vibe.
