As is tradition, for Thanksgiving night Sky Club switches the usual Latin Thursdays to Salsa night and waives the cover charge. Much for which to be thankful! DJ Cisco will be there spinning Salsa all night long and you can burn off the Turkey and dressing to the best sounds around.

Sangria is going all out for Thanksgiving Eve - biggest bar night of the year - with 2 levels of dancing. Upstairs at Skyclub will be a top-40 / reggaeton dance night but downstairs will feature DJ Cisco and a latin them with Salsa, Bachatta, Merengue and Reggateon.

Dinner Crowd Meets the Dance Scene

It seems like every few months I',m compelled to write about Sunday's at Sangria which somewhat to my suprise but much to my delight is really kicking now. Being the night before New Years Eve, my guess was that it would be pretty empty as everyone saved up energy for the big one. But to my amazement, when I arrived the place was packed. Every table was filled, the band was swinging and the dance floor was already jumping. I hadn't even planned to take any pictures, but it was such a great night that I couldn't help myself.

It's always great it is to see the dancers come out in force, but it's even better to see a lot of new faces. One couldn't help but notice the many new people either having dinner and drinks or out for their first time dancing and seeing what salsa is really about. One of the new faces was Shahida Nurullah - one of Detroit's jazz gems who knows her clubs and it was obvious that she absolutely loved the music and vibe.

Happy Meals at Sangria

For our second open invite meal we tried something a little different: a dinner and dancing get-together on a non-social night. The idea was to open it up to the YA volunteers and take away the pressure of rushing to the social. In addition to that since it was at Sangria we could then take advantage of Grupo Escobar's weekly performance and do our thing - dance. The result was another great time and a few more lessons learned on organizing this type of "meetup" event.

What more can ya ask for??

Since the idea is to help grow the community and introduce people to each other, the "open" part of the invite has been critical . And true to form, at each one we have had the opportunity to get acquainted with some new people. As well, we had the opportunity to introduce a number of people who had never been to Sangria on a Sunday to what has become one of my favorite haunts. However, even taking into consideration the weather conditions, I'm starting to conclude that "open inviting does not generate a lot of buy-in and committment." By being so open and not having the exclusive feel of a personal invitation, it leaves a lot of people considering it without committing to it.
