Summary:

Sundays at Sangria have been expanded to include live music downstairs and latin music upstairs. Downstairs, Grupo Escobar plays on a rich Cuban tradition and their style mixes salsa duro (old style), latin jazz and is guaranteed to please. This is currently the only regular live band night in Detroit at a restaurant where you can really get out and dance. The mix is about 50% people there for dancing and drinks and 50% people there for dinner. If you haven't been there yet be prepared for a great experience.

Upstairs, Salsa Detroit presents a diverse set of latin music all night long.

Sundays at Sangria going strong!

All I can say is that Sundays at Sangria with Grupo Escobar is pretty damm good! I have to admit that I was skeptical about Sundays at Sangia -- not a lot of marketing and I just wasn't sure that salsaeros would turn out and support a band week after week. I was clearly mistaken! This was my second time there. The first time I made it there, the turnout was OK, but just OK. Things seem to have picked up and it looks like this will really stick.

Sunday at Sangria was a blast!

Grupo Escobar taking it home!
As I said before, Sundays at Sangria are a blast and here's the proof! The band is into every song, the dancers are into every song and the people soaking up the the atmosphere are loving it! I have been trying to be responsible and do my chores on Sunday evenings all summer, but oh well -- add another dance night.

Dinner Crowd Meets the Dance Scene

Singer Shahida Nurullah and Tony
It seems like every few months I',m compelled to write about Sunday's at Sangria which somewhat to my suprise but much to my delight is really kicking now. Being the night before New Years Eve, my guess was that it would be pretty empty as everyone saved up energy for the big one. But to my amazement, when I arrived the place was packed. Every table was filled, the band was swinging and the dance floor was already jumping. I hadn't even planned to take any pictures, but it was such a great night that I couldn't help myself.

It's always great it is to see the dancers come out in force, but it's even better to see a lot of new faces. One couldn't help but notice the many new people either having dinner and drinks or out for their first time dancing and seeing what salsa is really about. One of the new faces was Shahida Nurullah - one of Detroit's jazz gems who knows her clubs and it was obvious that she absolutely loved the music and vibe.

Grupo Escobar is not playing this Sunday, but there will be live music -- no word yet on who is playing and if they are a salsa band. The upstairs will be open as usual too.
