Know Your Salseros NOVEMBER 2009

Kathryn & Manfred

¡Hola! Welcome to the November edition of Know Your Salseros.

You have probably seen these nice people at the YA Salsa Socials, and Sangria in Royal Oak amongst a few other dance floors in the area.

Manfred ("Manny") Busse from Germany, and Kathryn Arnold (sometimes with a video camera in hand, filming the YA Salsa Socials!)

Here's a little somethin' about each of them:

Name: Kathryn Arnold

Where are you originally from (ethnicity): I’m from Detroit, MI and I am bi-racial.

How long have you been dancing: I have been dancing since January 2009

Where did you learn: I’m still learning!!!! I take classes at Energetic Soul with Duane Wrenn, and I try to take workshops with different instructors if they come to Michigan or if I am out of town.

Where do you go out to dance: I like to dance at Sangria, YA Socials, Pi, Mangos in Miami…. people’s houses…. Wherever there is good salsa music….

What do you think could be done to expand the salsa scene: From what I have seen, using the social networking webstes is a great tool. Good promoters post videos, photos, and flyers which lots of people are able to view. Also, word of mouth- invite friends!

What do you do aside from dancing: I work in the film/ video industry, which is taking a lot of my time lately. I also love to travel.

Your favorite song: I am still learning the music also, but I like, Barranquillero Arrebatao, Timbalero, and Princesa.

What advice would you give to someone who is new to salsa dancing: When you go out, don’t be afraid to dance with as many different people as possible, it can be intimidating but it will help you become a better dancer. HAVE FUN!!!

Name: Manfred Busse or Manny

Where are you originally from (ethnicity): Germany

How long have you been dancing: Almost one and a half years

Where did you learn: I started learning in Germany, in the Salsa clubs around my area. I tried Ballroom as well, but I enjoy Salsa much more. If there were to be a “Salsa Addict” club, I would be a candidate.
YouTube taught me a lot. I took classes in Belgium and Germany and since I am in the US I visited a couple of congresses.

Where do you go out to dance: Wherever good salsa music is played! Sangria, Adonis, PI and the socials.

What do you think could be done to expand the salsa scene: Hmm… Let me think…. Wednesdays are covered, Thursdays are covered, Fridays are sometimes, and Sundays are covered.
Hey! We still have 3 Days without Salsa!!!”

What do you do aside from dancing: My hobbies are juggling, traveling, learning new languages, watching as many movies as I can, and learning about computers.

Your favorite song: One of my favorite Salsa songs is La Rueda.

What advice would you give to someone who is new to salsa dancing: Take classes, buy good dance shoes and than just DANCE! Sometimes I come across people who say “I first need to take classes for a couple of months before I can go out there…” That is wrong, because “out there” is the only place where you actually learn how to dance. You know the basic? Enough to have fun!
