Woody's Review

Even though I visit this site frequently, this is the first time I am actually posting a comment. Why is that? I really did not have anything I wanted to comment on until now.

I finally made it out to Woody’s for their Salsa night last Thursday evening. Granted, I was a little skeptical. The last time I attended Woody’s was probably seven years ago. There was a small rectangle dance space on the second level and the rest of the floor was covered in carpet. I really did not see how this venue could support a Salsa night with such a tiny dance space. However, my eyes popped in surprise when I walked into the second level of Woody’s for the first time in years. The majority of the second floor was now covered in a beautiful, smooth wood floor. What is this? A secret Salsa dancing oasis perhaps? Possibly. There was so much dance space I almost had to pinch myself. The other bonus was the sitting areas. There were tons of chairs and tables to relax and chat with people.

I highly encourage everyone to check out Woody’s Thursday nights. It is a great venue, wonderful music, and has great potential for all dancers

MetroDetroitSalsa.com / Woody's

How can you have a launch party for a website that is not up and running. It seems to me that Paul Kromer and Henry are simply just trying replicate yasalsa.com or SalsaDetroit.com. Not to mention has anyone seen Paul dance Salsa? It's funny! How can you promote something you don't have a love for and simply doing it for the financial aspect of it. I'm sure that it all stems from being let go from Sangria. Think about it! How can you honestly start a night around the corner and on the same night of the person (Luigee of Sangria) who took care of a person financially. Talk about biting the hand that feeds you. Trust me people there is alot you don't know. I personally have no relation with either party, nor speak to any of them, but I do listen and see certain actions and it is so obvious what is trying to be done. It's called a vendetta or simply put revenge. i'm sorry but i will not waste my 10 dollars and contribute to such actions.

Lets take a look at the sponsors and let me explain how each one benefits:

Cuatro Cirios - Come on are you kidding me? A tequila sponsor! Who drinks tequila prior to dancing.lol Not to mention it taste nasty.

Entertainment Express: Limo rides are from Sunday thru Thursday ONLY and you must tip the driver at least 80 dollars. I'm sure it would look really cool pulling up to Woody's in a limo.

Moda Clothing: the store is located in Southwest Detroit and they only have URBAN style clothing. Baggy pants, long shirts, caps, etc.

Nuestro Detroit Magazine: A local magazine written in English and Spanish that is in need for someone to proof read their English translations. It's called spell check.

Dot-sign (Company designing the website): Obviously the purpose of the website is for you to register and they in turn collect your email and then spam you. I'm sorry but I don't need to give you my email address so you can tell me about your one night of the week. If you look to the right of this page, the yasalsa website has a text box for you to willing supply your email address to get updates. It's called "Opt-In"

Woody's: Like any club here in metro Detroit: If you don't drink, the night will eventually go bye bye.

Ask yourself, what can another website about salsa offer us besides repeated information. We need one source of information and I honestly don't feel any website can compete with information that yasalsa.com provides. I am surprised to see yasalsa supporting such a website as all it would do is confuse people.

Ladies and Gentlemen, bottom line, you see all these sponsors supporting a so called salsa night, but I personally feel that if they really want to get my attention or anyone else, then they should be sponsoring YASALSA.

I apologize if anyone takes offense to this message but it was about time for someone to speak up. Im just a fellow dancer who wishes there wasnt so much drama in the scene. That's why I love the ya socials

Sincerely,
Adrian

Wow- Bravo! for speaking up!

Wow- Bravo! for speaking up! There is certainly some drama out there in the Salsa scene.
For sure- YA has the best source for Salsa information here in Michigan- because it's by dancers for dancers... pure and simple.

YASalsa.com

Hi Adrian,

I just wanted to clarify one point you made about YA Salsa sponsoring this event. YA Salsa/YASalsa.com, by allowing and/or assisting with posting events here, in no way implies that we are sponsoring the events listed on our site. But true to our nature and mission, we strive to support and promote the salsa scene in Metro Detroit without judgement by providing a free platform upon which anyone can do so.

We provide this site as a resource for all parties involved, promoters, dancers, DJs, instructors - anyone who has a salsa-related event to share with the public - and of course, most importantly, our very own socials!

Thanks for the kind words!

~ Jess

Strongly disagree with your assessment

Our intention as YA Salsa and mine as an individual who puts a lot of time into promoting the salsa scene is not and never has been to replace or put clubs and promoters out of business. Quite the opposite. We try to support those clubs and promoters who support the kind of events that we as consumers of the "salsa lifestyle" enjoy and that we think will benefit the salsa scene.

Like everyone else I work for a living and expect (demand) pay in compensation for that work. Thus I do not expect others to work for free or question their authenticity. I applaud those who are building profitable and sustainable salsa events that I can enjoy. If they can make a living putting on salsa events and YA can provide a bit of support in that effort then great. Sponsors are not that easy to come by, but they make it possible to put on events that would not otherwise be financially feasible. Its true that in general salseros don't drink much alcohol but if there exists a sponsor that will support the entertainment I enjoy - then "Thank You!" Lets hope the people and organizations who put this together get the benefits they expect - that leads to more events that benefit the salsa community.

We could look at it as - if there are two salsa nights then they must "battle" each other to get customers, but that represents a very limiting perspective. Just as every restaurant or clothing store in Royal Oak is not in a fight to the death with every other clothing store or restaurant, there is no reason to believe that salsa or latin clubs should engage in such direct competition. If there is only room for one salsa or latin club in a town with as much going on as Royal Oak, then the promoters are not doing their jobs. I know everyone you are referring to - all decent people, wish them all well and see no reason why someone not personally involved would feel differently. In the real world, business relationships come to an end and there is generally no reason for the public at large to take sides in something they know little about.

I really appreciate the nice things said about YA, but you really can not compare "what" we do with what the people mentioned in your post do or the relative merits of "why". If you don't want to support the new night at Woody's - then make a concerted effort to support the night at Sangria or some other place that caters to salseros. Regardless, keep things positive and growing.

I am appauled by this person

I am appauled by this person putting down Paul and and talking highly about Louigi. let me tell you something. Lougi doesn't give a F. about salsa. Just go there every Sunday where there is live music. Every week the chairs and tables seems to move more towards dancing floor. All he cares is money. You say Paul doesn't dance salsa. Well I bet you anything that he dances ten times better than Louigi (lol). Thursday in sangria was sick. It was full of rude, obnoxious and wild people that came to sangria in a gang style. Nobody dances salsa on Thursday. I will not go to sangria on Thursday even if they pay me. Off course Lougi can change the ambient on Thursday and make it more salsa friendly but guess what? why should he? Those obnoxious people buy a ton of drink and the bottom line for Lougi is money because he is a business man. Do not put down Wooy's if you truely care about salsa.

Interesting point of view...

... Without much intelligence though. It was a great and entertaining read. Mr.Adrian seems to "know all" next to Albert Einstein.

Let’s see here

"How can you have a launch party for a website that is not up and running" - Isn't that the point of a launch party? Why would you need a launch party if the site is already running?

"Has anyone seen Paul dance Salsa?" - Why should Paul dance to organize or promote an event? Its like saying Shakira's event promotion team need to know how to shake their ...... like she does :)

YaSalsa is an excellent overall source for salsa information in town and I see it more as an organization to promote the sense of salsa. Salsa Detroit is a website that belongs to "a" promoter that gives preference and promotes their event. So does www.MetroDetroitsalsa.com - It is their web site that they want to promote their events and other events if possible. Do you "wake up from your trance" one day and just say they are trying to replace Yasalsa ?...isn't that a dummy "ass-umption"? whats your proof ? I didn't see any comment like that in their site ?

Talking about sponsors, here it goes - Moda Clothing "They only have Urban clothing" - So what ? Dont you think you are so "minuscule minded" to even pass comments with a tone like that. Its a personal taste, may be you wear thongs and speedos, that’s fine but please don't bad mouth someone else’s personal taste. Dolce Moda has a lot more fashionable clothing...in case you have not visited their store or site.

This was hilarious "Obviously the purpose... .... in turn collect your email and then spam you". You definitely are an expert in “Online Paranoia” - I visited www.Dot-sign.com before I am writing this and did a google search on them as well. It looks like they are a genuine Web designing and business software building company that helps businesses succeed. I have seen some of their works and it is pretty darn good. I might even hire them for my business now. To me DotSign is more of a service provider for MetroDetroitsalsa.com - as simple as that.

Adrian, your “Hand biting” emotional comments make you actually sound more like a sissy or some "insider's job” wanting to instigate unnecessary argument and make people like me do mud slings with words.

If you really wished the salsa scene to be without drama, You’d have known “Silence is golden” – It makes you look brighter than you are!

See me, I like controversy and BS'ing. So I am writing things like this to provoke trashy conversations.... So people, if we all have time for that, lets do some "trample on trash talks" , if not lets just dance.

Yours trashingly
WTF

By the way: I love the fact that some one said –"Completion is healthy"… it is ! If not it would be a monopoly isn't it ?

Before Adrian jumps off his seat - typo correction

I meant "competition is healthy" - I got to correct my self before Mr. Adrian jumps on the typo and take the opportunity to let the entire world know about where he is going take his $10 !

WTF

competition is a good thing....so is Woody's!!!

I have to say I am really pleased that a new venue has opened up on a Thursday night, because I don't know about other salseros, but I was waiting for something better than sangria or habana to come along that day of the week (I still enjoy Sangria on Wednesdays and Sundays). I feel that Woody's offers a lot of what dancers are looking for: great floor and space, good music variety, friendly people of all salsa levels, plenty of seating and table areas, much less smoke, a convenient location....and all that for $5!!! I don't care much for all the drama, so I like to go where I know I'll have a good time. Therefore, I highly recommend Woody's to anyone looking for a good place to dance on a Thursday night! I hope it continues and grows!! I wish more venues would open during other nights of the week too, but it's tough in this economy and a relatively small city...places like Toronto, New York, LA, Chicago, DC, etc. offer numerous options for salseros on the same night, so competition is natural..I think we should strive for that here in order to attract better salsa nights for us, the consumers/dancers!

As a side note, I think Paul is a great promoter, and yes, I have seen him dance salsa and he's just as good as DJ Cisco ;) lol goes to show you don't have to be a fabulous salsa dancer to put on a fabulous salsa event!!

To Adrian

Just a quick note: In your comment mocking Nuestro Detroit Magazine and the need for proofreading, you misspelled "proofreading"! --Mambo Marci

A reply to Adrian's comments by Paul Kromer

First.... I would like to thank all who posted the positive comments and who have been supporting my venues. Thank you....it is you, the people, that have made salsa nights successful in Metro Detroit!!!

Second.... I would like to call out 'Adrian'. That is not your real name!! I think I know who you are though. I can tell by the style of wording. I don't think you have anyone else fooled either. Reveal yourself.

Third.... I feel the need to post something in my defense in response to those comments that 'Adrian' posted. He deliberately tried to make me look bad and that is flat-out wrong!! How can he say that I don't have love for Salsa!!!???

All my life that I can remember, I was always involved in event planning. My Parents had a tight bond with a large Cuban Family back when I lived in Florida. They used to rent out banquet halls on a monthly basis for salsa events. I would help out with little things like: wiping down tables, picking up ashtrays ect. The events were awesome!! Family atmosphere with food, kids, entertainment, dominos and of course...salsa / latin music.

My Godparents are from Cuba and my Mother was born and raised in Spain. They have been an inspiration for me in my life and have had a strong influence on what I do today. When I hear Latin music....I remember many festive days with my family.

I started promoting Salsa / Latin Nights in Metro Detroit in 1998. Mostly venues at night clubs. Here is a list of some of those clubs : 24karat (token lounge), Clutch Cargo's, Baci Abracci, Sangria, Heat, Posh, Envy, Tonic, Half Past3, iLounge and more.

Night club owners do get frustrated by lack of alcohol sales on a salsa night. I have suffered many arguements with unsatisfied club owners. But that never stopped me from finding a new place.

When Sangria first opened in 1999, the upstairs was a piano bar called "Crocodile Rock" (not Sky Club). The place had very few customers. Even the restaurant!! The owner wanted me to organize a salsa night there. I advised him to get rid of the pianos, install a dj both and change the name. He did, so we moved forward. I brought in Elaine Marrero from Troy Dance Studio and we started Thursdays in January of 2000. Latin Dance Party with Tango from 8-10. Sangria has been a success ever since.

However, many changes have been made since then and it is not the same anymore. Especially certain attitudes from certain people. I was not happy there for a long time and I prefer to live my life 'drama-free'. I've also heard countless complaints from many salseros about certain things.

My goal is to create a positive atmosphere where everyone feels welcome. It is truly amazing how such a diverse crowd can come together and be as a family....the way we are!!! !!SOMOS FAMILIA!!

The owner of Woody's is super cool!! He spent alot of money on the dance floor and set up unbelievable drink specials. He is very excited about long-term Salsa Nights at Woody's. My sponsors are super cool also.

I will continue to promote Salsa Night Thursdays at Woody's....you will even see me dancing a little more. :-) Also...the website is still fairly new, but it will progress as time goes by.

Happy Holidays to All.....even Adrian.

Paul Kromer

PS : I do appreciate input. This does help a community grow. I would love to hear from all Salseros (opinions about the music, dance lessons, ect.). Or if you have any I ideas for progress in the salsa community. Send me a message on facebook. or e-mail LatinCLBS@aol.com

PSS : Reminder.....Woody's will not be open Dec. 24th and will not have Salsa New Years eve. Salsa Thursdays will continue January 7th 2010
