2008 Concert of Colors
Posted July 17th, 2008 by Geo-
Detroit will glow a little brighter this weekend with the 2008 Concert of Colors. The Concert of colors celebrates the diveristy of culture though music and dance and it includes many great performers that you may have heard of or that may be new to you. Concert of Colors is truely one of the best events Detroit has to offer and it is offered at a great great price - gratis, free, no cover and no cost.
In years past, Concert of Colors has included major salsa performers like Spanish Harlem Orchestra and Eddie Palmeri but alas no such luck this year. But salsa is nothing if not a flexible adaptable dance so you should have no difficulty finding lots of danceable music.
Salsa highlights will include:
- Machito Orchestra & their Afro-Cuban sounds
- La Inspiracion doing a Bomba performance: a Puerto Rican community dance music and dance where dancers challenge the drummers to match their movement while at the same time mimicing the stiff movements of the elite class. Check out this example on Youtube.com...
- Herman Olivera performance down at Cafe Con Leche.
Tips
- With any festival style event, you need to be prepared with the right shoes as dance area conditions will be highly varied. High-heeled shoes probably will not be a good idea. The available surface in the Max Fisher building is probably heavy carpet and outside it could be cement. Campus Martius will have a wood laminate dance floor, but the area around it its a mixture of grass and cement and could damage indoor dance shoes. Best bet are the dance sneakers -- they will work on most any surface and will be comfortable all day/night.
- Car pooling is the best way to save on parking. Its probably best to pay a few bucks to park down there in the "pay lots" rather than walk a long way -- especially if you are alone.
- Food and drink are available and help support the event. In past years they have had a wide variety of multi-cultural foods which include vegetarian friendly food.

Concert of Colors/Machito Orchestra!
As Heidi noted previously, there is definitely not only a salsa presence this weekend at the Concert of Colors, there is the GREAT Machito Orchestra, a blend of New York musicians that are bringing the tradition of the mambo/New York roots from the 60's! They will be at Orchestra Hall on Saturday night, for FREE, from 10 p.m. until 11:15 p.m. Let's all go out and support this legendary music, which is the ROOTS of all this salsa stuff that we love so much! Azucar!!! -- Mambo Marci
Machito Orchestra was the Concert of the Year!!!
Thanks Marci for backing me up on this one!! This was some of the best live SALSA I have heard and DANCED TO in a looong time!!! There was more than enough room for dancing in the front, the aisles and the back!! This is a beautiful venue and I hope more come out next year to this great event!! They always have a Latin flavor and this year was NO Exception!! Salsa was very represented!! Every song was danceable and fun!! There were enough dancers for everybody and the band loved that people were dancing!!! Thanks Mark for getting the party started with me!!! It's just too bad that they coulddn't have played longer but they did do an encore which was fantastico!!!
