Salsa so far in Michigan in 2008
Now that the calendar has almost turned to May, can we say that through 1/3 of the year that 2008 is going to be the best year of Salsa the state of Michigan has ever seen?
For those who don't remember all that went on earlier this year, I posted a list in a previous post
By looking at the list there was an incredible start to the year. Changes and activity since that post suggest that there still is a great chance that this will be the best year ever. Highlights of the activity include:
- Harem moving to Friday nights
- The club formerly known as Half Past Three, now named Club TV is open on Saturdays
- Performance teams making their debuts to the salsa community (Detroit Salsa Divas, The Motor City Salseros)
- World Class instructors visited
- Lee Rios of Semenaya Dance Company visited YA Salsa the weekend of April 12th
- Giovanni Torres of Los Salsomanos Dance Company visited the Motor City
Salseros the weekend of March 8th
- Sammy D'Leon put on a fantastic performance at Venue on Friday April 18th
If there's anything I missed, please let me know and i'll add it to the list.
Going back to the question I asked earlier, I believe that we're more than on our way to making this the best year of Salsa the state of Michigan has ever seen.
With the ever increasing number of dancers, the talented instructors, the lively Salsa bands and the hard working promoters...there is great potential for Salsa to be absolutely HUGE here in Michigan.

Pretty Good
We do have a lot of great things going on -- like the continuation of Harem, opening of Venue, continuation of one of my favorite nights - Sangria Sunday's with Grupo Escobar, the social is zooming with record attendance and a lot of new people each month -- and of course, Sangria Wednesdays are still kicking. That is probably more than we could ask for.
But of course there are always things to hope for. One of them is that salseros realize how unique the Detroit scene is and reallys support the clubs and studios. We have one of the lower cost dance scenes - no $25 cover charges. It runs 7 days a week and is as friendly a scene as you will find anywhere. But we have to support that scene. If you have a favorite club, that $2-$3 for a water is not a rip off. It is part of the cheapest entertainment you can find. Buy something! We have a lot of clubs catering to salseros but they can only do it if salseros respond. This sounds like an NPR pledge drive, but guaranteed, cover charge does not adequately support these clubs. We can all make this the best year ever on the Detroit Salsa Scene by really supporting it.
I'm looking forward to Johnny & Andres at the YA Salsa Social, a salsa blow-out in October (SheShe has been working on this for a long time and details to come), Tiempo Libre, more Sunday's at Sangria w Grupo Escobar, Friday's at Harem, Saturdays with Salsa Detroit and you never know who the studios will bring in to town next. This is not mentioning everything going on the salsa map which will soon include Grand Rapids (volunteer willing).
Thanks for the post and lets keep counting our blessings!
