The Word Is IN

It's true. The word got out and we continue to blow the doors off of the American Legion. The March social was a whopper with 325 dancers coming IN and then walking out (or hobbling in the case of a few unlucky feet) tired and happy. Yes it's crowded, but its a great crowd and one can't even begin to explain to the uninitiated, the energy and feel of these events. It's not only an opportunity to dance or meet up with people you haven't seen in a while, we also get the opportunity to acknowledge the people who by doing their thing make our lives better.

Thanks & Happy B-Day

This month it was a birthday shout out to Cisco whom with his Salsa Detroit crew have been pillars of the Detroit salsa scene for longer than I've been dancing and a he is a key member of YA Salsa too. Everyone knows, the dancers can be tough on the DJs and promoters but that's because we are so into the scene that we want it to be perfect all the time every night -- which is of course different for everyone. So Sunday Jamin made a special point of not only calling out "happy birthday", but also making Cisco step out from the DJ station and join the rest of us on the dance floor for the snowball with a great running commentary. Little does he know that he'll probably be dragged out there every month until he goes willingly.

Community

First and foremost, YA Salsa socials are about community involvement. They are not money making opportunities for the YA Salsa team - the money goes into making the socials possible, providing lessons, marketing salsa and bringing in top notch instructors / performers from all over the world to help make our scene better. In addition, they are opportunities for the local instructors, performers, djs and merchandisers who provide for Detroit salseros to come in and connect with their audience -- you -- so we hope they will continue to take advantage and continue to give a little too. So speaking of giving a little too, thanks to everyone who took one of our salsa promo packs with them. We love the Detroit salsa scene and want to get the word out so we really need everyone pitching in just a little and the promo packs are a great way to do that. We will have more available at the next social and also at some of the clubs for anyone who wants to join our promo army.

Announcements

Each social we have announcements but with everything going on, I don't know how many people really listen -- so we'll do a little repeat:

  • April 12th are the workshops with Lee Rios and Maria Falcon from San Antonio Texas. Thanks to some leg-work by Daryl, they will be located FitnessWorks in downtown Detroit.
  • April 13th is the next social and Lee and Maria will be performing for us and more than likely joining us on the dance floor for the social.
  • Harem, our dancer play-land is moving from Thursday night to Friday night starting April 4th. The Thursday night is killing the Sky Mambo team (who all have day jobs) and the club owner Mohammed loves the salsa crowd so mark your calendars -- the move is on!

Safety Dance

Its awesome for us to have the salsa crowd growing like it is and to have 325 dancers come to a social without a band or guest performers to draw them in. A year ago we could have barely imagined it. But when we have so many people, even a huge floor like the American Legion's becomes crowded; so it is critical that everyone dance safely -- yep, you guessed it, kinda like the song.

Like anything we often don't recognize ourselves as being part of the problem... but we should all try to be part of the solution.
  • For leaders it means making sure you and your partner don't run into people and staying in your "space" becomes your #1 priority.
  • For followers, that means taking small steps (especially back steps) and staying near your leader.
Dance instructors, watch, talk to your students and work with them. We don't need more space, we need more awareness.

One of the great things about social dancing is being in a big crowd of dancers, but everyone has to be in control for it to be fun. For those of you who left a bit bruised -- hope you heal (not heel) quickly.

Till Next Month

Hope everyone enjoyed the social as much as I did and thanks to all the people - you know who you are - who showed up early, left late and spent their time at the door or DJ station, refilled the water, gave lessons, got the food and took pictures for the social: You really make it work. To all of the new people - welcome aboard.
