to mix or not to mix? that 's the question

To mix or not to mix ? , i always been curious about what people think of the way dj 's play the music , i am talking about salsa only , because some dj's mix the songs one after another , that means they beat match the songs to get a smooth transition betwen every song so the music set sound's like a single long song or a nice clean mix.

OK in the other end some dj's just play song after song without mixing , they just wait until the song is over and they play the next one right away ,that does not mean is bad , but it is less fancy.

So while some dj's mix ,there is a chance that they don't do a good job and people can loose the beat when they are dancing, that can cause people to get mad or live a club. and when they don't mix , the musical set sound s less fancy.

so there is two ways to mix , wich one do you like better? reply's are welcome.

not to mix

The natural breaks between songs for me signals the appropriate time to switch partners. Sometimes when they are too seemlessly mixed, you end up stuck with the same person song after song. That's not so great if you aren't enjoying dancing with the current person or you like to switch partners often. I don't like long pauses, but I do like to know clearly when the song is over.

KISS

DJs should focus on playing great music and creating a "flow" to the set. Mixing muddies up the sound and looping makes it hard to catch the breaks while dancing. Salsa is somewhat unique in that you dance with lots of different people and you really are trying to dance to the song with your partner. If you can't predict the changes in the music, you can't do that. If the DJ takes away the end of the song, you lose the finale to your dance and then you are still dancing with a person you are about to leave during the begining of the next song. Blending one song into another is almost invariably horible from a sound perspective.

I agree with pretty much everything that Jess & Jamin say.Use the pauses to tell people which songs you are playing.

Geo-

Mixing OK with me. Looping NO!

Very good question. Personally I don't mind the mixing that much although I would prefer not to have it. When the salsa songs are mixed really well it is tough to tell when the current song ends and the next one begins. It is only a problem when you want to stop dancing. It is considered bad form to stop dancing with your partner in the middle of a song. When one cannot tell when a song ends and the next one is beginning, it creates an awkward moment when you want to take a break but don't want to be rude and just stop dancing in the middle of the song. It does not happen to me so much since I have heard the song soooo many times I know when all the starts and stops are. I even know which song is coming next....

What really erks me is when the DJ loops the track. Nothing erks me more. A good track is playing, you are in a smooth grove with your partner, the momentum of the song is building up... Your energy and emotion is building up... That that big break moment is almost there and you just want to unleash all of that energy and emotion into a wicked move with your partner!... then the song loops back 10 seconds... OK so here it comes again!.. Loop back again... and again and again... By the time the DJ lets the song play through, the feeling is lost and replaced with a comment like, "It's about friggin' time!!"

Another vote for not to Mix

I have to agree with Jess on the not mixing. I think it a girl's worst enemy. I have danced with very few guys who have ever recognized the end of a song/beginning of a new one and asked if I wanted to keep dancing with them. Unless I'm really not enjoying myself or need a break, I don't mind dancing a second one, but I've also been caught in an endless dance with one partner where I am stuck for the whole block of 5 salsa songs and find myself praying for a bachata just so I can extricate myself from him. It is particularly hard if I don't know where the beginning/endings are, because as Jamin says it is rather rude to stop dancing mid-song. By the time I realize we're on a different song it's too late. Twenty minutes later I'm begging for a water break.

I like a nice pause between songs just long enough for me to say thanks, give a hug and look for another partner.

and another vote not to mix

dont mix

agree with Heather, Jess and Geo on not to mix...for all the same reasons - I dont want to beat the dead horse anymore.

Not to Mix!!!

Joining the other voters, I have exactly the same reasons. So many times I keep waiting for the end of the song, then the partner doesn't realize it's a different song, thinks he can go on & it seems rude to say "thank you!" and leave...

The way I see it is that not

The way I see it is that not all salsa songs have a strong ending ... so they don't suit to be ended ... instead mix to a song that goes clean with it and let that one end with a big bang or soft depends on type "Romantic, Fast, etc" Mix it up ... no matter what you will never satisfy everyone because everyone views things differently ... by doing some mixed sets and ending others you are being diverse just like your crowd. As a person of the crowd you have to realize that your DJ is doing his/her best to keep you all moving to the beats. Yes ... I do understand what you all say about switching partners but come on ... if you really really want to not dance at the moment ... no one has a gun to your head ... I'm sure your all mature adults who can choose what to do. Besides that's what the social industry is all about ... Enjoy! DJ BELIZE

Don't Mix....so I don't get

Don't Mix....so I don't get stuck with the same dancer endlessly...unless you see me dancing with a really good one...not necessarily good-looking... just a really good dancer!...or maybe a good-looking beginner...Oh, heck! Don't Mix - Zee

That's a weird response ...

That's a weird response ... which dj do u know that will actually pay attention to how your partner dances or looks or what category they belong to and then decides if they should mix the song for you? ... and if so ... that dj is in the wrong business ! Yeah, they may stare at you on a regular basis and criticize those elements In a personal manner (not out loud) but never make a choice and say ... OHP ! FULANO' S GIRL IS A BAD DANCER, I'M NOT GONA MIX SO THAT HE MAY SWITCH PARTNER'S ... AND SKIP EVERYONE ELSE.
To me it seems that people are loosing what the whole point of salsa is ... dancing ! Even if your partner is not good ... what happen to leading them and just having fun ... the way I see it no one is a bad dancer ... everyone is unique and just need to be unleashed !

It's not about a bad dancer

Though there are times that you can get stuck with a bad dancer, and most of us will dance through the song anyway, it's more about not being stuck song after song after song, getting tired out and unsure how to cut it off. It's bad etiquette to stop in the middle and if you can't tell where the end is, how are you supposed to do it politely? I can usually stand more than one salsa song in a row, but not merengue or bachata, my thighs start to kill ... we all need to be able to take breaks and do so politely for whatever reason we so determine. Having natural breaks between songs provides that opportunity, at least for me.

More than often i'm sure you

More than often i'm sure you can telll where the song ends ... when a song is being mixed even if seamlessly ... the artists vioce changes ... the elements such as instruments, rhythms, lyrics, ETC ... there is always a way to tell ... even if it's the same artist ... for instance Sonora Carruselles to Sonora Carruselles ... all their songs sound the same at some point ... and that's ok it's how you identify them ... besides that side statement they go perfect together is what i'm getting at but in between the mix you wiil hear the differences and catch the transition ... as a dj no matter how smooth the mix is I always notice that people notice ... if trance music which sounds the same all the way through can be noticed when mixed I'm sure Salsa where each is unique in sound can be noticed ... By the way ... I'm 50/50 on the matter of mixing ... it's the reasons that are posted that I'm arguing ... Just tell your partnes I'm tired we'll catch up on the next song ... or who cares ... your dancing not breaking up ....

The Horse is Dead

Just agree to disagree

well i'm not ... and it's

well i'm not ... and it's still posted and you just responded so how can it be a dead horse ? Trying to end a nice topic?

I think we undersnd your

I think we undersnd your position on the matter:

You are a DJ
You prefer to mix the tracks
You don't care if others don't like it, you are going to do it anyway.
You feel that others should like it too.
You think the reasons that others do not like it are not legitimate.

I miss anything?

By The way, where is it that you DJ?

DID I MISS ANYTHING

OK , i hope that everyone out there ,specialy you ,know what the "DJ"term means .just think about that for a second.
try to find out what the letter D and the letter J means in terms of music ,unless you are to ignorant and you don't know what that means.

IF people don't like when dj's mix then they should just play a cd and let it run by it self all night. what is the fun about that.playing track after track that is just to simple to me , but don't get me wrong i respect everybody's opinion , this is just my point of view.

Anyway i still love salsa music and merengue and bachata . just remember 'MUSIC IS THE SCIENCE OF SOUND , "DJing IS THE SCIENCE OF MUSIC AND WHAT A DJ DOES IS COMBINE THE ART OF SOUND AND MUSIC.

Where is it that you DJ?

Where is it that you DJ?

Before I answer where I work

Before I answer where I work at which I don't find to be relevant I would like for you to c what is my opinion. Don't judge me as a DJ ... I'm simply stating my position ... we can throw punches at eachother all year ... but before you say anything else first read what I have actually said on this thread ... I have never said that I stand for it 100% and YES I DO CARE WHAT PEOPLE THINK ... otherwise why would I be in this business ... I listen to all on my nights but not all seem to be able to be pleased so in the end of all matters ... no matter what we do as DJ'S there will always be a criticizer. And like the response was to you ... DJS exist for a reason ... if you don't like what you see/hear go home ... find a new place ... BECOME A DJ ! and try to fix your problems ... you'll understand from our behalf ... trust me ... WE TRY OUR BEST!

Now that you can c what I have said ... clearly I hope you see that I have never been selfish on the matter ... please come c me at Empire Lounge in Windsor Ontario ... look it up at www.windsorsocial.com
I play there on Fridays ... but I will warn you ... I play more of a club style ... not strictly salsa ... so if your a salsahead I may not meet your standards ... but give it a shot ... Salsa, Reggaeton, Dance, Merengue, Bachata,

Tell us about Fridays @ Empire

I've heard that there is a latin night at Empire, but we haven't been able to list it because we can't find any information. The website link is really not useful at all... Send an email to info@yasalsa.com including our standard information for the salsa/latin nights -- club name, cover, dress code, ages, description of venue, dj, types of music, % salsa, type of floor, lessons? A picture of the venue will be great too. Send it and we will get it listed ASAP.

Geo-

When I DJ I don't Mix, let me tell you why..

When I DJ I don't Mix, let me tell you why..
It is because I don't know how!! LOL!

I should learn though, it would be a useful skill to have. Like I said, I don't mind the end of one song being mixed into another. I would prefer it if my salsa songs were not mixed but oh well... You can't win em all... Unless you start your own salsa night...

DO YOU KNOW ANY GOOD DJ S

i haven't seen any good dj 's aroud lately dj cisco is ok to me , he has a good reputation as a dj but some times he just play the wrong stuff . dj george play's old stuff that no body likes 's. i recently whent to the ya social and is the second time that i see dj isaac playing some good tracks , i say this because i am a music lover and i think he is not bad what do you think?

what do you in a personal

what do you in a personal basis consider to be good salsa? There are subcategories so .... do you choose good salsa by artist, Tempo, background(Cuban, Columbian,Puerto Rican, etc,),popularity????? Too many factors.
On your topic about Good DJ'S what is a good DJ????? Every DJ has his/her unique style ... I'm sure you'll hate some ... and like some ... for the ones you do like ... ask yourself what was so different about them compared to the other ... A good DJ is whomever you decide .. everyone will choose differently... just look at what you said "i haven't seen any good dj 's aroud lately dj cisco is ok to me , he has a good reputation as a dj but some times he just play the wrong stuff "

Having a good reputation doesn't neccessarily mean the best ... what makes his reputation good? His selection, the time he has been around the scene, His mixing ??? It obviousily can get a DJ far but inthe end still not enough to satisfy all ...

There are a few I could name.

I don't really know the "who's who" list of salsa DJ's that are out there but here is a list of the people that I like:

DJ Latilladi of Chicago
DJ Luis Rivera of Chicago
DJ Efrian of Cleveland
DJ Roberto Ayala of Chicago
DJ Issac of Detroit
DJ Shekyla of Detroit
DJ Koki of Detroit
DJ Saif of Detroit
DJ Sabor of Detroit

What is the definition of a "good DJ?"

This topic seems to surface every year or two. How and why do we define and rate the DJ? What consitutes good or bad? Are we rating them by the type of music, the era, the duration of the song, the loudness or softness of the music (to me the louder the music the less I enjoy it), the mix or lack of mix? Whether they play for dancers or music lovers? Interesting that we judge persons in this manner. I know I wouldn't want to be a DJ.
It seems there has been a lot of experiementation and aiming to please the dancers lately most of which I have enjoyed or been challenged to figure out what type of dance I can do to the music. My partners and I have been stumped by a few that have changed from Cha Cha Cha to Bachata or Salsa or Merengue. One of my partners made it fun by mixing the dances during a song telling me what was going to be next. It was a riot. I do find it awkward when my partner & I can't figure out the ending or beat of a song. All have been good sports & we finally decided whether we wanted to continue to dance or leave the dance floor. Guess it is a matter of choice.
Sharon

It is all subjective

I know what I personally like in a DJ. But the things the might qualify them as "good" to me may not for others. So who knows...

Thanks for the Post

I really appreciate the comments. When it comes down to it the DJ is there to move the crowd. It really does not matter what the DJ wants as much as its the Dancer/customer that matters. Dancers dance to the movements in music... Unless your a musician leave the mix alone
