Heidelberg - Club Review

I went to the Heidelberg "Club Above" for the first time Friday, Sept. 21. While I arrived at the end of the lesson, I was impressed by the number of people that were there and it was packed by the end of the night. I can't vouch for the quality of the lesson, but I can tell you that I liked the energy of the place. Here's my take in general:

  • Music was OK. There was a mix of salsa, bachata, merengue, and little reggaeton at the end of the night.

  • DJ kinda sucked. The music was OK, but the DJ wasn't very good at mixing. He played too long of sets - 5 bachata, 5 merengue, 5 salsa, and they didn't really flow into each other very well. I don't know about you, but I need a little more variety from song to song, and the music needs to be mixed seamlessly.
  • The atmosphere was couple-oriented. It was hard to know (but that's probably because it was my first time there) who knew how to dance and who didn't and who it was OK to ask to dance. Everyone was coupled up and seemed a little territorial.

In all, I think it's worth a trip and the cover. There are lots of good dancers, and lots of new dancers and couples. And if you are there alone, people are friendly enough to strike up a conversation.

Agreed...

My experience in three or four visits has been pretty similar. Its consistently packed wall to wall and high energy. Before midnight there are lots of students and Ann Arbor locals dancing salsa merengue and bachata. After midnight the crowd changes and the music shifts more to reggaeton and merengue.

Not my style...

I have not been to the Heidelberg in years but there is a reason for that. The last few times I went the DJ played everything but salsa. I like a mix of music too but salsa is always what keeps me coming back. I agree about the long sets thing, waiting 40 minutes between salsa sets is unbearable. I also noticed the couple-oriented thing. It seemed like every lady I asked for a dance refused because there were with their boyfriend. I can't say there is anything wrong with that. I am just not used to it. I guess the openness of the other Latin/Salsa night has spoiled me!

Like I said, I have not been there in years but after reading your review it has inspired me to visit it one more time and see if it is better then I remembered.
