On January 13th 2008 Grupo Salvaje will return to the YA Salsa Social for a night of live salsa music and dancing. It has been a whole year since we last saw them at the social (or had live music for that matter). That day was special for us in a number of ways. It was the first time we ever had live salsa music at the social. It was the biggest turnout we ever had. Over 400 people showed! Last but not least, Grupo Salvaje performed all night free of charge! (Well, almost free, we gave them gas money :) Grupo Salvaje was the first and the only band to do that for us. Given that YA is completely driven by volunteer effort, a gesture like that really meant a lot to us. It says that these guys see the potential in the Detroit salsa community and they are also doing what they can to help build it. And by their giving, maybe they can help make salsa scene stronger for everyone. After all, that is what this thing is all about! By the way, the proceeds from that event played a huge part in financing the following March Super Salsa Social. Without Grupo Salvaje’s contribution, an event of that caliber could not have been attempted.
I love the way these guys sound and the energy they inject into the room when performing, but do you know what else I like about these guys? When you ask Grupo Salvaje to perform, you get more then just great music. You get powerful advocates! I am going to take off my YA Salsa hat and put my SKY Mambo hat of for a minute. Not too long ago I had the pleasure of working with David Caraballo when booking the group to perform at the Harem Nightclub. David is one of the singers for the group as well as the manager. After we set the date and everything was a go, he didn’t just sit back and wait for the performance date to come. David took it upon himself to hand deliver fliers about the event to studios, restaurants, and other locations all over the Metro Area. Moreover, he didn’t just drop fliers off on some table somewhere. David actually took the time to talk to the people there to tell them about the event, salsa night in general, and what our organization is all about. He didn’t have to do that at all but he did, and it was amazing. Let me tell you, keeping a “salsa” night going in Detroit is not easy by any means. So having someone like David in your corner making the extra effort to insure your success is priceless.
I am really looking forward to seeing these guys again at the YA Social. They great performers and since they are great people it will make our salsa dancing the experience all the more satisfying! See you on the dance floor!!
