Heidelberg
Ann Arbor's Friday night salsa spot, I have never been to this place when it was not shoulder to shoulder with people drinking and dancing the entire night. The Heidelberg is unique in that you will hear a fair share of Cumbia and Banda music along with the standard mix of Merengue, Bachata, Latin House, and Salsa.

So this is where all the mexicanos go...4/10
The caribean latinos shouldnt waste their time at the heidelburg. its a gross environment, and they play the same genre of music for felt like 20 minutes without changing, which really sux if you get stuck dancing with someone who isnt enjoying themself, which seems to be almost everyone.
The DJ is horrible, he does not no how to mix music, and plays the same stuff every week. no crespo, or taƱon, Anthony, ive been there 3 times and never once heard celia cruz. 100% mexican versions of everything, which gets anoying very, very fast.
wow...

why did you show up three times
They play the same genre of music for like 20 minutes without changing - 100% mexican versions of everything - and this is where all the mexicanos must go - and you actually showed up three times and got stuck dancing with someone who was not enjoying themselves, and it seemd like amost everyone was not - yet the place is still on, ugly and all.
Did you ask the dj after, lets say, the first 20 minutes of the same annoying stuff, if this was the regular plays or if they varied throughout the night, say like the regular salsa, merengue, bachata, reggeaton and yes, maybe some mexican?
What is this!?
What is this "So this is where all the mexicanos go," and "the caribean latinos shouldn't waste their time.?" With attitude like this, you don't deserve to dance salsa and makin' your culture look bad.
'The Bar Above'=THE BAR TO AVOID
The bar above is horrible. If you are intersted in OVER-PRICED shitty beer and CRAPPY music, please join the people upstairs. Downstairs is very fun. Once you come upstairs, though, you enter a totally differnt atmosphere where the bartenders are not friendly and the DJ is overtly racist and makes rude sexist remarks. Karakoke, in partiucluar, on Wednesday nights is a racist and sexist event where only white girls with fake boobs enter the stage. Occasionally a black girl with large boobs joins them. If at all possible, avoid the 'Bar Above' at the Heidelberg and check out any other bar in Ann Arbor where people of all races are treated with respect and dignity not found at the Heidelberg Upstairs.
The ultimate latin dive bar
Small dance floor and overly crowded. Check
Poor music and lousy DJ. Check
Aggressive pushy men. Check
Lack of good dancers. Check
Smoky as hell. Check.
This is a great place to go or take your friends if you like being harassed and groped by aggressive and pushy men with the etiquette of Neanderthals. This is a dive bar to hook and bump&grind to the reggaeton/latin house with prince Charming.
I refuse to take my friends there to dance and I've heard enough of my friends complain about being groped to avoid Heidelberg at all costs.
You leave the place reeking of smoke and the occasional beer/drink split on you if you're lucky. Expect to be felt up and groped. To 'survive' there learn to be stand offish and keep saying "No, no, no, no, no" like a broken record player till the men there get it that you don't wan to dance with them. A little martial arts training may come in handy if you want to get out of wrist lock when someone grabs you to drag you to the dance floor.

What bar are you talking about?
The Heidelberg...
I would have thought it was obvious all the comments left on this page are for the Heidelberg.
Can't knock it that much
In all fairness, Heidelberg is kind of two club nights in one. It starts off with a short beginner salsa lesson and for a little while they play mainly salsa. However by about 11:00 PM the place starts getting pretty crowded and starts playing more merengue and bachata. Then by midnight a different crowd shows up and salsa wise it's game over with mostly reggaton or merengues.
If you are looking to dance salsa, this is not your place after 11:00 PM. If you are looking for a rowdy latin night - you might like it. There is usually a big mix of college students and non-students and the after midnight club certainly looks a little rougher than the pre-midnight crowd.
People have been enjoying the place for years and while I rarely go, I don't think its terrible. The floor is not a dancing floor and there is no room, but you can have fun. Take these things for what they are and if you have a favorite night, make sure you support it with your $$$.

Thank you
It is unbelievable that a negative review would reach the heights of insulting any one group or their style of music. Kudos to the writer who asked why would you show up three times by paraprhasing the negative reviewer. Kudos to the awesome piece of information to the above writer. Now we can choose to review online, or just show up, take a chance and if it is that distateful to you, yes, give your negative review, without bashing, keeping in mind that we are all here to share our love of dance and music, regardless of our cultural backgrounds. Good for the club to provide such a variety of styles, there is something for everyone!
